Description
Kanna is a small groundcover plant native to Southern Africa, historically eaten or chewed, or used as a snuff-producing alertness that gently fades into relaxation. A tea made from Sceletium is sometimes used to wean alcoholics off alcohol. Although the plant has been used for thousands of years in Africa (Hottentots of Southern Africa used Kanna as a mood enhancer, relaxant and empathogen), it is only now being sought by the West for its remarkable capacities to uplift the mood and increase energy levels and concentration spans. Kanna may also be used to relieve symptoms of depression, stress and tension, similar in function to the more well-known herb St John s Wort. This herb may also improve cognitive function, reduce high blood pressure and be helpful in cases of post-traumatic stress disorder, social phobia and general irritability.
